Feb Half Term: Year of the Dragon!

Celebrating Chinese New Year! 🎆🎆🎆

Join us at Eureka! Science + Discovery from 10th – 25th February as we usher in the Lunar New Year together with a colourful and vibrant event that showcases traditions and explores the origins of some of the most iconic aspects of this celebration!

Chinese New Year is a huge celebration in Liverpool, with the city being home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe. With guidance from the Wirral Chinese Association, we’ve planned a whole host of activities that will have your little ones exploring, crafting, learning and even….DRAGON DANCING!

What's On?

🌟 Show: The Legend of the Monster, Nian 🌟

Chinese New Year celebrations are a riot of colour and noise, but where does this come from? Discover the origins of Chinese New Year in our storytelling performance and make lots of noise with us to scare off Nian, the legendary monster!

Location: Theatre
Dates/times: Every day*, 11:00 / 12:00 / 13:00 / 14:00 / 15:00

(*with the exception of February 17th at timeslots 12pm and 2pm – the Nian show will be replaced with a Lunar New Year Dragon Dance performance from our friends at the Wirral Chinese Association!)

Capacity: 90 seats in the theatre

🌟 Animals of the Zodiac Moving Science Workshop with Flux 🌟

Discover the animals of the zodiac in this interactive moving science workshop. Slither, shake, stomp, and spread your wings with us!

Location: MakeCreate

Dates/times: 10 – 14 Feb and 23-25 Feb
11:00 / 12:00 / 13:00 / 14:00 / 15:00 / 16:00

Length: 20-30 minute workshop

Capacity: 20 per session – book on arrival.

Age range: Suitable for 4+

🌟 Chinese New Year Crafts 🌟

Get creative in our hands-on arts space and produce your own decorations and masks. Wear the masks and wave the decorations you’ve created during our Dragon Parade and then take them home with you!

Location: Community Space

Dates/times: Every day, drop-in between 10 – 4.

Age range: Most suited for ages 4 – 11 but all ages welcome.

🌟 Dragon Dance Workshop 🌟

Dragons are legendary animals that are linked to good luck, long life, and wisdom! Learn the art of Chinese Umbrella and Fan dancing, as well as the iconic Dragon dance, in this interactive workshop.

Dates/times: 15 – 22 Feb inclusive
10:30 / 11:15 / 12:00 / 13:30 / 14:15 / 15:00

Length: 30 minute workshop

Capacity: 20 per session – book on arrival.

Age range: Suitable for all ages, but under 4’s may need extra support!

🌟 Dragon Parade 🌟

Made a dragon or mask in our arts zone? Join us in the main entrance area to parade your creations and make some noise to bring in the new year with good luck!

Location: Hub at the main entrance

Dates/times: Every day, twice per day – listen out for our tannoy announcements!

Age range: All welcome!

🌟 Red Envelope Trail 🌟

Red envelopes are a traditional gift during Chinese New Year, symbolising good wishes and luck for the year ahead. Follow our trail around the galleries and get involved in our colourful celebration.
